Using Tornado 2.0 / VxWorks

with Motorola MC68040 VME Targets

with WinNT Host

Normal procedure

Select one of the VME computers (big, noisy light-gray box), note the target IP address on the white label, and turn it on.
Start the Tornado registry to keep track of targets (Click "Start Menu" -> "Programs" -> "Tornado_68K" -> "Tornado Registry" ¹).
Start Tornado for Motorola (Click "Start Menu" -> "Programs" -> "Tornado_68K" -> "Tornado" ¹).
Open your project or workspace.
Create and launch a new target server

Click "Tools" -> "Target Server" -> "Configure".
Click "Create New".
Replace the name with the name of your target (ie, "vme1").
Check "Add to menu" (this adds your target configuration to the menu so you don't have go to the configuration window).
Type in the name of your target below the check box.
Set "Target Properties" to "Console and Redirection"
Check "Create Virtual Console" (this will create a telnet-like terminal on your host)
Check "Redirect Target I/O" (this will set the virtual console to behave as if it were a terminal hooked up to the VME serial port)
Enter the IP address of the VME target (ie, if using vme1, enter 155.31.72.55)
Click "Launch"

The system will attempt to launch the target server, and will show a red target icon in the user's tray (bottom right corner of the WinNT screen, along with all the other time, Novell, RealPlayer, etc., icons.). If the target icon has a yellow ! over it, there's something wrong and you probably need to do one of the following:

Reboot your target computer -- just turn it off for a few seconds, then turn it back on.
Reconfigure the target to get its image from a different computer (explained below).

Click on the empty white drop-down box near the top left of Tornado, and select the target server for your target (when using the simulator, this box automatically selects and displays vxsim...).
Set your project build to use the MC68040gnu toolchain (you may have to create a new build, or change the active build).
Build your object files.
Download the object files to the target.
You may now debug, open windshells, browse, etc., as if you had started a vxsim target.

Reconfigure the vme target

Open a hyperterminal session to COM1 on the old 486 PC next to the vme boxes.
Connect the null modem cable on the 486 PC to "Serial Port 1" on your selected vme box.
Turn on the vme box

The hyperterminal window will show output from the vme startup ROM. If you are doing this just to see if vxworks is loading probably, wait for the count-down to pass, and watch the ROM messages as the vme attempts to download its image. You should get a nice banner saying that VxWorks has loaded. If instead it hangs on the line "Loading...." and does not show any numbers, the vme is having trouble downloading the image. You must either reboot scooby (155.31.72.172, the WinNT station nearest the door) or set the ROM to download the image from another computer that is running an FTP Server with the vxworks image.

To reconfigure, interupt the count-down by pressing the "Enter" key. The target should provide the following prompt:

Enter "c" to enter the configuration menu.
Hit "Enter" to bypass items you do not wish to change. The default values (for vme1, with a target IP address of 155.31.72.55) are:

boot device : ei

processor number : 0

host name : scrappy

file name : pub/vxworks_ip

inet on ethernet (e) : 155.31.72.55

inet on backplane (b): 11.0.0.1

host inet (h) : 155.31.72.172

user (u) : ******

ftp password (pw) : ******

flags (f) : 0x0

target name (tn) : vme1

To get the vxworks image from another machine, set "file name" to the directory and name of the new image (path name is relative to the FTP Server's home path)² and change the "host inet (h)" to the IP address of the new host you want to download from. Note that the user and password must be those supported by the FTP Server.
Hit "@" or the RESET button to restart the vme target.

¹If this link does not exist, find the Motorola (M68K, 680x0, etc) installation of Tornado (NOT the Intel, x86, etc., version) and search for the following executables to run:

wtxregd.exe
tornado.exe

²For some unusual reason, even though the vme target is downloading the image from the computer at "host inet", Tornado's target server will give an error if the vxworks image file does not exist on the host development computer you are connecting from. An easy fix to this, if you're not using an existing setup, is to read the error message from the target server, and to just copy the image to the error location even though it will not be used.
